Hanif questions Falco on horse welfare vs. worker concerns

New York City Council · Jul 15, 2026 · starts 2:28:01 · 2 min 12 sec

Hanif asks Falco how she responds to people who believe supporting horse welfare and carriage drivers are mutually exclusive. Falco says things change and workers need to move on, but she's here for the horses who can't speak.

I think it is deeply important to make sure that these people who have spent their lives as carriage drivers, potentially the lives of their parents and their families, it's very important to look out for them, for sure.

Member of the Public - Edie Falco

And I'm so glad that the speaker has made that a big part of what she's doing.

Member of the Public - Edie Falco

other people here, I am here to speak for the horses, you know, because they can't say, like a pedicab driver, when you say to him, you know, do you want to pedal?

These people all the way up here in 90 degree heat, he could be like, you know what, no, it's too hot, I'm not doing it.

Member of the Public - Edie Falco

You know, the horse can't say it.

Member of the Public - Edie Falco

And I think for those of us who are moved to do so, because you think it is right and humane, someone's got to look out for them.

Member of the Public - Edie Falco

So that is my priority.

Member of the Public - Edie Falco

It's my reason for being here today.
