Marte relays Won's questions on Sunnyside and Woodside site deficits

New York City Council · Jul 22, 2026 · starts 0:20:06 · 1 min 54 sec

Marte relays Won's concerns about Sunnyside having only 3 secondary sites and Woodside having 15 sites (12 secondary), asking how Parks will address inequities in Sunnyside and prioritize acquisitions in Woodside. A Parks staff member explains GIS analysis captured all eligible Sunnyside sites and that community board input shaped selections.

Christopher Marte

Sunnyside and Woodside have the deepest park deficit in CD2.

Christopher Marte

Out of the 37 identified sites, three are in Sunnyside and 15 are in Woodside.

Christopher Marte

As the neighborhood with the most severe lack of public access in CD2, it is deeply concerning to see that only three sites, all of which categorized as secondary sites, have been identified in Sunnyside.

Christopher Marte

How will parks address this persistent open space inequity for Sunnyside residents, especially those in South Sunnyside who have only one point?

Christopher Marte

eight four acres of open space.

Christopher Marte

And my add-on question to that is, while Woodside has a total of 15 sites identified in this proposal, 12 of these are secondary sites, which seem less likely to be acquired because they already have buildings on the property.

Christopher Marte

How will New York City Parks prioritize making sure that these acquisitions move forward in Woodside?

Christopher Marte

So I guess you can answer the Sunnyside question first and then go to the Woodside question.

UNKNOWN

Yeah, so I'll just speak a little bit to our process for identifying the secondary sites.

UNKNOWN

So for Sunnyside, we really included all of the sites that we could.

UNKNOWN

We did a GIS analysis where we looked at all of the lots that met all of our criteria.

UNKNOWN

And unfortunately, in Sunnyside, there weren't as many sites that met those criteria.

UNKNOWN

And then as well, I'll just add that we engaged a lot with the community board throughout this process.

UNKNOWN

We are really responsive to what they wanted to see.

UNKNOWN

So the sites that you see included in the application are also a reflection of all of that outreach to the community board as well.
