Councilmember Restler questions on business relocation from site

New York City Council · Aug 12, 2026 · starts 0:49:53 · 1 min 58 sec

Restler asks about two businesses at the site: Lights Out and a confectionery business. Palachnik confirms the confectionery has relocated to New Jersey with the developer's assistance, and Lights Out is moving to 73 Kent Street in Greenpoint, still within the district. Solomon Federer confirms the NJ business owner is happy with the facilitated move.

The area surrounded by the dots is the entire rezoning area.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

So not all of the properties in the rezoning area are proposed to be redeveloped at this time.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

Gotcha.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

And how would the bulk of the proposed building compare to the neighboring school?

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

Oh, that's easy.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

If whoever's controlling the screen can go to slide five.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

The neighboring school is analogous in height to what we're proposing.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

If they go to slide, page five of the slide.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

There you go.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

Okay.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

You can see there the school is on the right-hand side of the green box.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

The school rests at a height of about 87 feet.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

We're proposed to be at 90 feet, so we're very similar.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

Okay.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

Thank you.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

Council Member Ressler.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

Great.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

Thank you so much, Chair.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

And thank you for the clear and brief presentation.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

I had a couple things I wanted to ask about.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

There's been change in ownership in this process, and we've been discussing this site for a number of years now.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

I should say on the record, and the chair will enjoy this, that Councilmember Gutierrez had her baby shower party at this location.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

Five years ago, maybe even longer, before we were in the city council, it was a great time.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

So we're going to miss Lights Out, but I did want to check their two businesses at this location.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

One is Lights Out, which, again, Councilmember Gutierrez in particular will miss, so will all of us.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

Where is Lights Out going, and the confectionery business, what's their status and where are they relocating?

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

The confectionery business is gone already.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

They're relocating to New Jersey.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

Lights Out is going to 73 Kent Street, which until I heard that, I did not know that there was a Kent Street in addition to a Kent Avenue, so I learned something.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

You should come to Greenpoint more often.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

It's still in the district.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

So, okay, so they're going to be in Greenpoint.

Member of the Public - Eric Palachnik

They're okay.
