Speaker Menin closes meeting: condolences for Farah Louis's father and September Legionnaires hearing
Speaker Menin extends condolences to Council Member Farah Louis on the passing of her father Andre Lewis, shares funeral arrangement details, and announces a September 2 hearing on Legionnaires' disease with seven deaths and five residents still in critical condition. She closes the stated meeting of August 13, 2026.
Okay, thank you.
Just a couple quick announcements.
First of all, I want to extend our deepest condolences to Councilmember Farrah Lewis on the passing of her father, Andre Lewis.
We've been in touch with the council member.
She's just transmitted to us the details about the arrangements, so we will be sending that out this afternoon for any member that can join.
And I know we all join in extending to the council.
member our deepest condolence for this loss.
One other matter I just wanted to build upon what Councilmember Shulman, Epstein, and Maloney talked about with Legionnaires.
There were seven deaths in my district and Councilmember Maloney's district due to Legionnaires.
We have five residents still in critical condition in the hospital.
It's a very, very difficult situation.
We have, I know Councilmember Epstein left.
We've got the situation in his district.
And so we're having a hearing on September 2nd.
And I really urge everyone to attend.
We've got a number of really great bill ideas to try to fix the gaps in what is happening.
Because sadly, council passed some legislation, but many of the building owners were not complying with the legislation.
There were a ton of vacancies that weren't filled in the health department for inspectors, for water ecologists.
So we have a lot of questions.
We have a lot of good bills in the package.
We're looking at more.
So if you have bill ideas on legionnaires that you want us to look at, please send them to the ledge division.
And I urge everyone to join the hearing.
It's September 2nd at 10.
And with that, that closes the state of meeting of August 13th, 2026.
