Menin announces Rafael Rubio granted permanent asylum
Menin shares historic news that City Council employee Rafael Rubio, wrongfully detained by ICE in January, has been granted permanent asylum and returned to work at the Council after a long legal battle.
So I want to start off with just incredible news that we received this week, and that is that our city council employee, Rafael Rubio, has been granted permanent asylum.
This is historic.
This was a very long battle.
As you all know, he was wrongfully detained by ICE in January.
We were heavily involved in his legal case, getting him legal counsel to file habeas petition, getting him new legal counsel later on that he needed.
And I could not be more overjoyed that he is back home in New York City where he belongs and he's back working at the New York City Council.
So this is really just incredible news because this fight has now finally come to an end.
