CM Nurse questions HPD on Rent Transparency Act sign enforcement
Nurse raises the Rent Transparency Act requiring rent stabilization signs in building common areas, showing a copy of the sign and noting it is not very conspicuous. Levy agrees to work on better design and provide data on enforcement actions and 311 complaints about missing signs.
I have one last question.
Last year we passed a bill, the Rent Transparency Act.
It forces landlords that have at least one or more rent-stabilized unit to put a sign in the common area.
I have a copy of it.
This is what it looks like.
It's not very conspicuous.
I'd love to work with you all to make it more conspicuous maybe.
But I did have any questions.
You might not be prepared to speak on it today given the topic of the hearing.
But if in the follow-up you could let us know if you've done any enforcement actions, if there have been 311 complaints from tenants who know their building has stabilized units but haven't seen the sign-up.
We have heard from tenant organizers that they've been successful because of some of the signs that tenants realize they're being illegally overcharged for rent.
So that's the intent.
So, yeah, we'd love to.
Get the sign to look better.
Something.
Maybe some designers.
Well, I didn't design it, so I'm not taking responsibility for that.
I don't know if there's designers in the sign department.
We would be happy to both work on the design.
Did we design this?
Yes, you did.
All right.
Well, we will be happy to work with you on better design.
I don't know if it was DOB or HPD, but somebody made it, and it's not as good as it could be.
And Marie says it was us, so it's us.
Okay, sorry.
We will happily make that prettier, and then we will get back to you with the numbers of code inspections or in violations that we've written for noncompliance.
Awesome.
Thank you so much.
Thank you, Chair.
Thank you, Councilmember Nurse.
That's why I'm talking about fonts in the safer bill, and text color, because graphics.
Okay.
Next up, we're going to have Councilmember.
We're going to have Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, followed by Councilmember Epstein.
