Brewer questions Verizon's role in 911 contracting

New York City Council · Sep 9, 2026 · starts 1:29:18 · 1 min 2 sec

Brewer asks about Verizon's role. Barbera explains the city is in a hybrid state between E911 and NextGen 911: Verizon is the primary E911 provider, Motorola is the primary NextGen vendor. Once migration completes, E911 will be decommissioned and Verizon's role reduced to communication services.

Gale A. Brewer

Okay.

Gale A. Brewer

You mentioned Verizon also in your statement.

Gale A. Brewer

What role do they play in the contracting, if at all?

Lisa Gelobter

I will defer.

Gale A. Brewer

To my colleague, Rob Bumr.

Robert Barbera

Thank you for the question.

Robert Barbera

Because the city's 911 environment is currently in a hybrid state between E911 and NextGen 911, Verizon is still the primary service provider on the E911 side,

Robert Barbera

while Motorola is the primary vendor on the NextGeneration 911 side.

Gale A. Brewer

Okay, so ostensibly one contract, Verizon might be moved on if in fact it's just

Gale A. Brewer

Future contract, right?

Gale A. Brewer

Or we don't know yet.

Gale A. Brewer

Would Verizon continue in the next generation?

Robert Barbera

No.

Robert Barbera

So once the migration is complete to next generation 911, the E911 system will be decommissioned and Verizon's role will be reduced to communication services.

Gale A. Brewer

Okay, that's what I was trying to ask about.
