Sanchez questions Anderson on Rikers Island parcel transfers for composting
Sanchez asks how many parcels DOC has transferred for Rikers composting. Anderson says two large contiguous parcels have been transferred to DCAS plus decommissioned jail facilities, though buildings need demolition first. Sanchez asks about repurposing jail buildings; Anderson says composting requires large open spaces.
And before we go back to co-digestion and Hunt's point once again, I just want to circle back quickly to the composting on Rikers Island question.
It has, or do we know how many parcels the Department of Corrections has transferred or will transfer once?
Rikers is a figment of our imaginations.
Yeah, so there are two quite sizable parcels that have been transferred to DCAS as well as a number of jail facilities that have been decommissioned and transferred.
I think that the challenge with the jail facilities, as we've had conversations with DCAS and others, is you have to demolish the buildings that are there, and that's sort of the first step.
So I know that the city, through DCAS, is looking at opportunities to begin that demolition process.
But we are...
Predominantly looking at the two large contiguous.
parcels that have been transferred.
Awesome.
Is there no, probably a side note, do Haxa actually demolish all of the jails?
Is there no way to activate, you know, maybe gut the inside of and turn it into something fresh and new?
I don't think you could use any of the existing buildings for composting purposes because you need sort of large open spaces for composting and jails are not known for those.
Large open spaces.
