CM Hanks on Staten Island 121st precinct crime increase and deployment
Hanks notes the 121st precinct in Staten Island has major crime up 1.5% and felony assaults up 25.1%, asking what triggers additional deployment. Hout explains the CompStat process of bringing stakeholders together to analyze data and deploy resources.
Thank you, Chair.
Thank you so much for coming.
We always appreciate the hard work of the...
NYPD.
So I'd like to kind of circle back where it comes to the precision policing.
Of course, citywide, you know, major crime is down, but the picture is really not the same everywhere.
So in the 121st precinct in Staten Island, major crime is up 1.5% and felony assaults are up 25.1%.
Comstat should help NYPD seeing where a problem is growing and respond quickly.
So basically my question is with numbers like this, what has to happen before NYPD sends more officers?
You know, when NYPD sees a crime category increase in a precinct, how does it relegate their deployment, and how do we work with addressing problems
with a scalpel?
Thank you for the question.
So anytime there's a shooting or a crime spike throughout the department, whether it be Staten Island or the Bronx or wherever, we come together as a department and we look at the data.
And we see where we need more resources.
So with that, the posture of the department, you know, we see a string of shootings.
When we analyze, we respond, we deploy accordingly.
You know, we would talk about something like this at a comp stat meeting.
We'd bring all the stakeholders together, meaning the precinct CO would be there, the intelligence bureau would be there, the detective bureau would be there, and we would share ideas and we would share our vision.
in that area and see what we could do better and where we can improve.
