Hout on precision policing and violence reduction zones
Hout describes the department's data-driven precision policing strategy, including summer violence reduction zones that are continuously evaluated and redefined based on crime data, with plans for a winter violence reduction plan.
They are standing on foot posts in the heat and in the cold, in the middle of the night and on holidays, dedicating their lives and at times risking their lives to keep the people of New York City safe.
They are carrying out the department's data-driven precision policing strategy.
That strategy includes carefully analyzing crime trends to make disciplined, granular deployment decisions, placing officers where they need to be when they're needed most.
We do this systematically through violence reduction zones.
For example, beginning May 4th, the department launched a summer reduction violence plan.
We identified the times and locations where violence is most concentrated during the summer months and surge resources accordingly.
Now that the summer has concluded, we are looking ahead to the winter violence reduction plan.
We will again define high crime winter zones and deploy additional resources to those areas.
The zones are not static.
We continuously evaluate the data and reassess strategy.
