Hout on summer safety success during major events
Hout highlights the safest summer for gun violence in NYC history during unprecedented events including NBA Finals, World Cup, and SAIL 250, with 195 shooting incidents and 66 murders from June to August.
This includes a 12.8% decrease in auto theft, an 11.9% decrease in robbery, a 13.9% decrease in burglary, and a 5% decrease in grand larceny.
I want to highlight this recent summer months.
There was an unprecedented series of high profile events, including the NBA finals, the World Cup, SAIL 250, and the largest Fourth of July celebration in the nation, all of which put a tremendous demands on the OYPD.
But we kept our focus on fighting crime, and the results speak for themselves.
Whether measured by shooting incidents, shooting victims, or murders, this was the safest summer for gun violence in New York City's recorded history.
From June 1st to August 31st, there were 195 shooting incidents, 32 fewer from the previous record low set in 2025.
249 shooting victims, 44 fewer than the previous record low set in 2018, and 66 murders, 12 fewer than the previous record low set in 2017.
We achieved this success because of the work done every day by the men and women of the NYPD.
