Chair Thomas-Henry questions Khan on MTA responsibility for Second Avenue Subway business assistance
Thomas-Henry presses on whether the administration has considered providing grants similar to other municipalities during major infrastructure projects. Khan notes the Second Avenue project is an MTA project, says such a program doesn't currently exist in the city, and mentions Council Member Salaam's related bill on construction grants is under review.
Thank you, Councilmember.
So the Second Avenue project in particular is an MTA project that the MTA is carrying out.
So theoretically, if entities that were managing major capital projects, millions if not billions of dollars, if they allocated funding for such a purpose and wanted to work with SBS, we would work with them.
But that type of a program, as you mentioned, may have existed in other jurisdictions but doesn't exist in the city.
We're looking for a nudge from the admin to help convince them to provide.
We understand there's a council bill that Councilman Yusef-Salaam has introduced.
that would also seek to provide grants for roadway construction.
And we know the administration is reviewing it and we're in active conversations on ways to tailor the program.
