Council Member Salaam questions Khan on Manhattan storefront vacancy rates in Upper Manhattan
Yusef Salaam notes Manhattan has the highest vacancy rate and asks for a breakdown for Community District 10 and corridors like 125th Street. Khan provides a 13.9% vacancy rate for the district, notes upper Manhattan and downtown have higher rates, and says the Manhattan average is around 13%.
Councilmember Salam?
Thank you.
Thank you, Chair.
And thank you, Mr.
Khan, for being here and visiting, both of you visiting my...
My district as well.
Just a few questions.
The report shows Manhattan has the highest storefront vacancy rate in the city.
And Manhattan businesses were the largest group served by the commercial lease assistance program.
But Manhattan can hide very different realities.
Can SBS break down how many of those businesses
We're in Upper Manhattan, and specifically in Community District 10.
And what is the current vacancy rate on corridors like 125th Street, on Lenox Avenue, and on Frederick Douglass Boulevard?
Thank you, Councilmember.
We may not have the data on the corridor-specific vacancy rates, but for your district, we have a vacancy rate in the latest quarter, quarter two,
of 13.9%, which is elevated for Manhattan, but also reflects broadly the Manhattan rate, which remains.
Around 13% citywide.
And the pockets of Manhattan that have some of the higher vacancy rates are upper Manhattan and then downtown Manhattan and then parts of Midtown.
And then other parts of Manhattan are not seen as elevated levels of vacancy.
Gotcha.
