Morano questions Khan on Staten Island IBZs and the Boundary Commission
Morano asks about the identity of the mayoral appointee representing the industrial community on the IBZ Boundary Commission. Khan explains the commission was last convened in 2014, its purpose is boundary designation, and the administration is developing a broader economic growth agenda that should inform any commission changes.
I have two final questions, one on industrial business zones and one on the social media aspect of things.
Staten Island has three industrial business zones, North Shore, Rossville, and the West Shore.
These are important areas for businesses that need industrial space, including the kinds of businesses that depend on freight transportation.
The committee report identifies something rather remarkable.
We apparently don't even know the identity.
of the mayoral appointee who's supposed to represent the industrial and manufacturing community on the Boundary Commission.
Can you tell us who that individual is, and can you tell us whether that person actually operates a manufacturing or industrial business?
So the Industrial Boundary Commission was last convened in 2014.
It's convened for the purpose of designating, modifying, or amending or repealing the boundaries of these industrial business zones.
That's the purpose of that commission.
It doesn't impact programming and services that occur at the agency, and prior administrations have chose not to convene said commission.
This administration is currently in the process of developing a larger economic growth agenda, which would include a focus on industrial and manufacturing businesses.
And we think that, depending on the process there, it should inform if the city would want to then...
Amend or consider other commissions and other entities and how they should function and the powers of said commissions.
But in prior administrations, they've not convened this commission.
And probably they may have determined that the boundaries as existed sufficed for their purposes.
