Wilson Q&A: housing assistance process for veterans
Wilson asks what happens when a veteran seeks housing assistance. Smalls describes the intake process: veteran housing coordinator assessment, housing plan development, subsidy assistance, and hand-in-hand support through permanent housing placement.
Thank you.
Related to that topic, there's a pretty clear link between mental health and housing.
And I'm just curious, when a veteran comes to your department seeking assistance with housing, what happens next?
Is there a case manager or are they referred elsewhere?
For assistance?
Thank you for that question.
So when a veteran comes to DBS for housing support, they do the initial intake.
They speak with a veteran housing coordinator to see what their housing needs are.
We come up with a housing plan for the veteran.
We assess their needs, if they're able to pay, are they linked to the VA, do they have any housing subsidies that we can assist with, you know, finding them housing.
If they don't have a housing subsidy, we walk them through the process hand in hand from the beginning to the end up until it's time for them to move into permanent housing.
