Wilson Q&A: identifying homeless veterans through street outreach
Wilson asks how DVS identifies homeless veterans beyond shelter referrals. Smalls describes coordination with DHS, DSS, street outreach teams, and a veteran coordinator stationed at HRA on Mondays and Tuesdays.
And outside of veterans in the shelter system or veterans that come to you for help, are there other ways that you are looking to identify homeless veterans that are experiencing homelessness?
Do you coordinate with any of the outreach teams that are out in, that are canvassing the city?
Or how do you identify those folks?
Yes, we do work closely with DHS, DSS.
We do stay in communication with the street outreach teams, but we also do outreach at HRA.
A lot of times veterans that's coming in to HRA, we have a veteran coordinator that's there Monday and Tuesdays.
If a veteran is experiencing housing difficulties outside of being in shelter, we have someone there to assist with that.
