Wong asks about climate education requirement and curriculum mapping
Wong asks if DOE has begun planning for the climate education requirement effective in 2027-28. Cordelia Veve says DOE is mapping state climate standards into existing science curriculum and will provide guidance to schools.
On March of this year, the Board of Regents adopted what's called a climate education requirement,
effective in the 2027-28 school year for grades 5 to 12, and for 2028-29 school year for grades K to 4.
My question is, has DOE begun planning?
for the climate education rollout and what subject areas and license areas will carry that.
Katie and Sharon.
Anybody answer that?
I think I can take that.
Delia Beve here, Chief of Curriculum and Instruction.
So I think very similarly to the personal finance rollout, what we're doing is we're taking what the state has said, they've given us clarity around what are those standards for climate education,
and then mapping that into curriculum that we already have.
And so what happened for personal finance was they took the finance education that they were already using in CTE and pathways.
What we're looking at now for the climate education is looking at our science curriculum so that we can very clearly say to schools, right, to speaking to consistency, we can say here's where that lives in the curriculum that you're already using.
As you make instructional decisions, make sure that you are leaning into these particular units because we know that those hit the climate education standards that the state has set forth for us.
Can I pause for one second?
Don't think we swore you in.
You didn't.
I raised my hand earlier, though.
I'm just going to do it now.
Do you affirm, tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth before this committee, and to respond honestly to Councilmember questions?
Now I do.
Now you do.
Which means, Councilmember Wong, I think you better watch out.
Everything she said before that, maybe not true.
Okay.
