Brewer describes mayor's Signal group and document retention concerns
Brewer cites a Columbia Journalism Review report by Dr. Anya Schiffrin on an invite-only Signal group used by the mayor's communications team to share talking points with influencers, raising concerns about auto-delete features and compliance with city document retention rules.
The second way that the mayor in particular uses social media is more novel and very effective.
At the end of the last month, a Columbia journalism review by the very great Dr.
Anya Shifreya reported, she reported on the use, and she'll be here today to talk about it,
of an invite-only signal group used by the mayor's communication team to share updates, talking points, and clips to a selected group of social media influencers.
The Signal messaging app allows users to auto-delete messages.
That's how Signal works.
And it is not clear in what
cases of this feature was active.
The signal service don't keep copies of messages.
So we want to ensure that the mayor's team is following the city's document retention rules when using the app, and that's called archiving.
I'm an archive nut.
I just want people to know.
There also appears to be at least some overlap between the influencers who are paid to promote agency campaigns and those on the mayor's signal distribution list.
