Council Member Joseph asks about Project Open Arms and student detention
Council Member Joseph asks how MOIA is working with Project Open Arms and NYC Public Schools to protect students, including legal steps if students are detained. Lorena Lucero says MOIA speaks with Project Open Arms weekly and coordinates on legal services and elevated cases.
And then my other question is, how is Moya working with Open Arms in New York City Public School?
You know that was coming.
And to make sure that...
If our students are detained, what are the legal steps?
The council has been very supportive, and what are the legal steps in place?
And have there been any ice-taking of any of our students recently?
Do you want to talk about Project Open Arms?
So we, I speak to them every week, and that's true.
And we have been working very collaboratively.
The commissioner mentioned on top that even with the rollout of some of the protocols at schools, we were working closely with them.
We continue to collaborate on the legal services front and coordinate if cases are elevated.
As from the top of my head, I can't give you if there was a number or something like that.
I haven't either.
But I'm happy to circle back, but we are working with them.
Again, we thank council for the foresight in supporting that initiative with Project Open Arms in particular because it has added some capacity, so we appreciate that.
Is there any collaboration with the door?
The organization, the door, because they also do that work around young people and especially young people who are in care.
We work with them through iCare as well, through the iCare Coalition and some of the work that we do with unaccompanied minors.
Thank you.
I look forward to more conversations.
Thank you, Chair.
