Council Member Lewis cites TPS and ICE statistics for Haitian New Yorkers
Council Member Louis says about 350,000 Haitians nationwide held TPS, including 40,000 in New York City, and that those protections are now gone. She cites ICE arrests in New York City and says Mayor Mamdani raised TPS devastation with President Trump.
An estimated 350,000.
Haitians nationwide held TPS, 40,000 right here in New York City.
Those protections allowed people to work, support their families, and build lives in our communities.
Today, those protections are now gone.
While Haiti remains consumed by gang violence, with 1.47 million people displaced and 5.8 million facing food insecurity, the country, our neighbors, fled is
no safer today.
It's actually worse.
And the consequences are being felt right here in New York City.
In July, ICE arrested 919 people in New York City, nearly twice the number just three months prior.
More than three quarters had no criminal history.
None.
Even Mayor Mamdami recognized what is at stake, convening his third meeting with President Trump yesterday,
this time at Gracie Mansion, raising directly how TPS termination has devastated several industries in our city, including hospitality, health care, and faith-based communities.
If the mayor of New York City is bringing this message to the president, the least we can do is go on record in support of restoring these protections.
