Brown details federal pressure and hospital capitulations in New York City
Brown describes federal executive orders, funding cuts, investigations, and regulatory actions. She says NYU Langone, Mount Sinai, and New York Presbyterian began ceasing youth gender-affirming care in early 2025, and Mount Sinai and NYU later entered DOJ settlements to end puberty blockers and hormone therapy.
The federal government has waged an all-out campaign against transgender and non-binary people, especially our youth and their health care.
Confronted with executive orders, federal funding cuts, federal investigations, and regulatory policies across the nation and here in New York and New York City, providers of gender-affirming care for transgender and non-binary youth
have begun ceasing the provision of care and discharging their patients.
Notably, in New York City, three major providers of gender-affirming care for transgender and non-binary youth, NYU Langone, Mount Sinai, and New York Presbyterian, began ceasing their provision of care in early 2025 following one of the first presidential executive orders.
Over the last three weeks, both Mount Sinai and NYU Langone, in the face of federal investigative subpoenas, entered into settlement agreements with the U.S.
United States Department of Justice, agreeing seemingly to end the provision of puberty blockers and hormone therapy to transgender and non-binary youth for the treatment of gender dysphoria permanently.
This has resulted in immense fear, harm, and significant breaches of trust in the transgender and non-binary community.
It has also resulted in an increased vacuum for care for transgender and non-binary youth here in our city and for those who come to our city seeking care.
Mayor Mamdani, Commission on Human Rights Commissioner and Chair Christine Clark, and I have all spoken out on private medical institutions who have capitulated to the federal administration.
On September 9th, I spoke at a rally outside of Mount Sinai, criticizing their settlement with the Department of Justice.
