Brown announces $15 million city investment in gender-affirming care
Brown says the Mamdani administration announced a $15 million, three-year investment. It includes a direct care access fund, a confidential health department call and chat line, research on access gaps, gender marker change support, and coordination and evaluation.
The Mamdani administration has been and remains committed to ensuring that transgender and non-binary youth are able to access their medically necessary gender-affirming care.
In June 2026, we announced a proactive $15 million investment to protect, ensure, and expand access to gender-affirming care for young transgender and non-binary New Yorkers.
This investment, spread across three years, provides emergency funding to directly support providers of gender-affirming care for trans and non-binary youth, connect trans and non-binary New Yorkers to care, and to fund research amid these escalating federal attacks.
This funding is broken down into the following three initiatives.
The majority of the funding will go to a direct care access fund for providers of youth gender-affirming care.
The Department of Health will implement a new fund to support qualified providers of pediatric
gender-affirming care in their provision of care to youth patients and to address financial shortfalls resulting from any denials or reductions in federal funding.
This funding will ensure the continuity of care for medically necessary puberty blockers and hormone therapy for transgender and non-binary youth in accessible and affordable care settings.
The city will also launch a confidential and dedicated call and chat line at the health department that will link people to available services related to gender-affirming care in New York City in real time.
The city will also fund research to identify gaps in health care access and outcomes.
The health department will conduct a mixed method research grounded in partnership with academic and community experts.
We welcome the opportunity to discuss partnerships with you all.
The funding will also bolster support for gender marker changes on vital records through the Department of Health, as well as support for overall coordination, evaluation, and data analyses for the gender-affirming care initiatives that I just went over.
