Farías asks what YRBS shows on TGNB youth mental health disparities
Farías asks what the gender identity data show on depression, anxiety, self-harm, and suicide. Davidoff says disparities exist and cites 2023 suicidal ideation rates: trans 42%, nonbinary 38%, other gender identity 45%, questioning 28%, and cisgender 16%.
Okay, and since we do capture that data, what does it show, if at all, anything around depression, anxiety, self-harm, suicide attempts or ideations among TGNB youth compared to their cisgender counterparts?
Yeah, it shows health disparities for sure.
So it shows that students who identify as transgender are more likely to report electronic bullying, feeling persistent sadness or hopelessness, suicide ideation, and suicide attempts than cisgender students.
So for example, in the
2023, we saw that public high school students who identified as transgender or non-binary or some other gender identity or questioning were more likely to report suicide ideation.
So those groups were 40, the groups, sorry, let me say this differently.
The percentage of each of those populations that reported suicide ideation were for transgender was 42%.
For non-binary, it was 38%.
Those who said that they identified as some other gender, it was 45%.
And those who identified as questioning, it was 28%.
That's, again, the percentage who reported suicidal ideation versus those who identified as cisgender.
It was 16%.
So that's just we have data on the various outcomes, but that's just one example that illustrates the disparity.
