Restler adds one-in-100 data point; Garner cites disparity within disparity focus
Restler notes that out of every 100 MWBE contracts, one went to a Black woman-owned business and one to a Latina-owned business. Garner says the city first raised overall MWBE inclusion from 23% to 36% and is now focusing on the disparity within disparity.
I just want to data point that I had in my opening that I think both of you would appreciate.
Out of every 100 MWB contracts, one went to a business owned by a black woman, one went to a business owned by a Latina.
Out of every 100 contracts.
Sorry, but you heard the question.
I'm sorry.
No, no, it's a good question.
So certainly we
We are prioritizing this now.
We first got here, the city of New York's MWBE percentage was 23%.
Last year, that number increased to 36% MWB inclusion.
So we wanted to focus on increasing and exceeding the city's annual goal of 30%.
And we've done that for two years and counting.
Now we are focusing on the disparity within disparity.
Of focusing on black and Hispanic-owned businesses and women-owned businesses.
Certainly, we have a lot of work to do when it comes to the recruitment, certification, and engagement of women-owned businesses and integrating them into the procurement process.
