Restler recounts history of NYC MWBE program
Restler traces the MWBE program from 1989 through its halt under Mayor Giuliani and reestablishment in 2005. He notes two decades of small purchase programs, mentorship, and agency goals but says much remains to be done.
We're having an oversight hearing on the city's minority and women-owned business program.
New York City first developed an MWB program back in 1989, and after a review of the city's contracts, found that MWEs were substantially underutilized.
Unfortunately, the program was halted by Mayor Giuliani, one of his many failures, but the city council reestablished the program back in 2005.
And over the past 20 years, we have made significant strides in opening up opportunities for MWBEs in city contracting through small purchase programs, mentorship, and ambitious agency goals.
But much more remains to be done.
