Council Member Epstein asks about income breakdown of study abroad participants
After Chair Joseph recognizes Council Member Wilson, Council Member Harvey Epstein asks for data on household income of study abroad participants. Holland says 48.7% are Pell eligible but only 1.2% have qualified for public assistance, showing steep barriers at the lowest income levels.
Thank you for that.
We've been joined by Councilmember Wilson.
Councilmember Epstein, your questions?
Do you have data on the students who use the travel board, their household or family income, and do you break that down about lower-income students going versus higher-income students?
I have a little bit of data for you on that.
So 48.7% of our students who study abroad are Pell eligible, and only 1.2% of our students who study abroad
are or have at some point during their college careers qualified for public assistance.
So you see a big difference there in terms of financial need.
Those are all students who are very low income, but at the very low end, we see very significant barriers.
