Gutiérrez asks about pre-K to kindergarten transition gaps
Gutiérrez asks how NYCPS ensures multilingual learners transition from pre-K to kindergarten without gaps in services. Garcia says identification can begin June 1 and includes home language surveys and assessments.
How does NYCPS ensure successful transition of a multilingual learner from pre-K to kindergarten, making sure there are no gaps in services?
So I spoke a little bit about this before.
It does begin with the identification process.
And the fact that Part 154 allows us to begin the identification process in June 1st is really a game changer.
That was not always the case because it opens that window to be able to bring in the family, do the home language survey, get to know the student, identify them.
And if they are, for the parent to make their decision, right, like to understand what they have at the school.
Given that in kindergarten, right, we have the NISATL, which does provide the language proficiency in English of the student.
And that's a good foundational, like, start to know where the child is in English proficiency.
We have a Spanish lab for all students who come in with home language of Spanish to get a sense of their Spanish language skills, right?
And then we have, you know, additional assessments that are done at the school level to get to know students, along with parent questionnaires to get to know the parent.
Thank you.
