Honda outlines World Cup goals: access, safety, and small business benefits
Honda says the tournament brought historic opportunities and complex challenges. She says Mayor Mamdani wanted every New Yorker to participate, the city to stay safe and moving, and bars, restaurants, and businesses in all five boroughs to benefit.
So this summer, we welcomed more than 1 million people from around the world for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The tournament not only brought historic opportunities for our city, but intricate and complex challenges as well.
Mayor Momdani was clear from the outset.
We had to make sure that every New Yorker could be a part of the celebration.
We had to keep our city safe and our streets moving.
And we had to make sure that bars, restaurants, and business from across all five boroughs benefited from the World Cup.
Thanks to the tireless preparation of our city agencies and the dedication of New Yorkers both inside and outside of city government, this tournament was a success on all three fronts.
