Lasry reports $3.5B regional impact and permanent soccer investments
Lasry says the World Cup generated $3.5 billion in regional economic impact, including $2 billion for New York City, $1.9 billion in direct spending, 27,000 jobs, and $414 million in state and local tax revenue. He says the host committee invested in permanent mini pitches in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island.
We also wanted part of this investment to remain long after the tournament ended.
Working with the U.S.
Soccer Foundation and other partners, we invested in permanent mini pitches and soccer infrastructure, including projects in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island.
Taken together, these efforts contributed to an extraordinary result.
The World Cup generated an estimated $3.5 billion in total economic impact across the region, $2 billion of which were for New York City, exceeding our original projections.
That included $1.9 billion in direct spending, more than 27,000 jobs supported, $1.4 billion in labor income, and more than $414 million in state and local tax revenue.
Every investment required to deliver our joint bid contributed to that success, from the operations necessary to stage the matches and move hundreds of thousands of people to free fan experiences, local business programs, and community investments throughout New York City.
The World Cup was a huge success for the region, but its significance extends beyond what we accomplished over those 39 days.
It demonstrated that New York and New Jersey can successfully deliver an event of extraordinary global scale while creating meaningful opportunities for the people, businesses, and communities that call this region home.
New York has always been where the world comes for its biggest moments.
The World Cup reaffirmed that we remain the best city in the world for major sports.
and entertainment events, and provided a model for how we can approach the many global events that will come here next.
We're incredibly proud of what we accomplished together and of the opportunities the World Cup created for New Yorkers across all five boroughs.
Thank you, and happy to take any questions.
