De La Rosa asks how new 311 complaint categories are added
Chair mentions bills to add categories like dog runs and stolen SNAP benefits. Morrisroe explains categories can be added through legislation, internal gap analysis, public suggestions under Local Law 97, or agency requests, all assessed by 311 and agency partners.
I alluded to earlier that we have a lot of bills that my colleagues want to hear on 311.
Some of them are to like.
add categories, right?
Like I have one that is my pet peeve one, which is about dog runs.
Like we can't report stuff that's happening in dog runs right now.
There's not a category for that.
Can you walk us through the process of like, what would it take to add categories?
That's a simple one, but some colleagues have bills, for example, around SNAP benefits being stolen, right?
Like things that are really critical for someone who's not getting a benefit from the city that they deserve.
So what's the process of adding a category?
I can definitely speak to that.
There's a few different drivers that could trigger it.
So yours is a great example, right?
And I assume we'll hear more in a future hearing on some of those suggestions.
But legislative driven is some.
Last year, there was a great partnership between the council and 311 and OTI to create the new cannabis retailer complaint.
So we worked with council member Brewer and then the entire process.
So that's one way, right?
It gets brought up in that respect.
Our own team will figure it out.
Hey, there's something gapped here.
There's something missing here.
We have a vehicle for the public to submit that situation.
Council passed local law 97 a couple of years ago.
So that's a process that the public can identify something.
And then we'll put the 311 resources and the agency resources to assess it to see if it's needed.
And then the agencies themselves, which is often a way to not only bring something new, but also to tweak something that may be in place.
So all of those are different ways, but they all at one point or another come into 311 as similar.
to what we do with the public as intake.
We're going to assess that.
We're going to confirm it's not in place.
And then what does it look like it could be?
And then work with the agency or work with the mayor's office and or work with council to be able to figure out how can we now get that into the system.
Got it.
