Brooks-Powers asks if new coordinators will be assigned to isolated communities
Brooks-Powers asks whether any of the 10 new citywide incident coordinators will be designated for geographically isolated communities like the Rockaways or Staten Island. Farrell says NYCEM borough-deploys coordinators when resources allow, and Brooks-Powers advocates for a dedicated coordinator for Rockaway, Broad Channel, Breezy Point, and Southeast Queens because travel from other parts of Queens is long.
And the 10 additional coordinators that you all are hiring, will any of them be, like, designated for the geographically isolated communities like Rockaway, like Staten Island?
So what we do with our citywide incident coordinators, and it depends, like this weekend, you know, we had more folks working because of the hazards we were facing.
What we do when we have sufficient resources and when we have...
have a storm or other things coming is that we will borough deploy our staff.
So they will, at a minimum, if we have five people working, we can have one work out of each borough.
So...
But even with the, like, one out of each borough, with the exception of Staten Island, because it's not, like, broken off from another part of the same borough, but, like...
The Rockaway Broad Channel Breezy Point area, like the way we're situated, I think it would be helpful.
And really Southeast Queens, you know, it would be good to have one designated, even though you have one for the borough, because realistically to get from Astoria to Rockaway,
It takes an extremely long time, just in general, to get to, I tease Councilmember Thomas Henry all the time, she calls Far Rockaway, Far, Far, Far Rockaway, and all of her kids say that to me as well.
But it's really the rest of the city that's far from us.
And so, you know, wanting to make sure that we have the coverage that we need, it would be great.
So I am advocating for that as you determine placement of these coordinators.
