Farrell explains Red Cross hotel placement and HPD referrals
Farrell says the Red Cross monitors public safety communications and responds to fires at one alarm and above, and NYCEM notifies the Red Cross when a fire is likely to displace residents. Displaced residents are registered and placed in a hotel for two nights, then referred to HPD for longer-term shelter case management if eligible.
In addition to our city resources, the Red Cross monitors public safety communications and responds to all fires that reach one alarm and above.
On a daily basis, the Red Cross responds to vacate situations across the city to register New Yorkers and provide them with temporary hotel placement.
Additionally, if emergency management responds to a fire that is likely to displace residents, we will notify the Red Cross to ensure they are also responding.
Once registered with them, displaced residents are placed in a hotel for two nights.
Residents are then referred to HPD for longer-term case management assistance if they qualify for the HPD shelter system.
