Maiano explains call surge and ambulance arrival after parents left
Maiano calls the situation tragic and says EMS was experiencing a surge of 274 calls in that hour, about 100 above normal. He says an ambulance was dispatched from a distance and arrived at 9:37 a.m., about five minutes after the parents had already driven the child to the hospital.
So first off, I just want to say that this is an extremely tragic situation.
I am a father myself of three boys, and I could not imagine what those parents were going through at the school.
What I can tell you is at the time that this call was coming in, EMS was experiencing a 100-plus call surge than what we normally see.
We normally see about 179 calls per hour.
And during this hour that this assignment took place, we had a call volume of 274 calls for service into 911.
An ambulance was dispatched to this call.
The ambulance was coming from a distance.
They did arrive at the location, but they did arrive after the parents left to take the child to the hospital.
How long after?
They actually arrived at 9.37, and it's believed that the child left to go to the hospital five minutes prior to that.
