Q&A

Hankerson questions borough permit staffing levels

New York City Council · Sep 30, 2026 · starts 0:24:28 · 1 min 55 sec

Hankerson confirms staffing counts: Staten Island 3, Queens 6, Manhattan 8, Brooklyn 5, Bronx 8. Cerrone says Brooklyn may be lower due to retirements and a staffing transition, and will follow up with precise numbers.

Ty Hankerson

I want to just acknowledge that we've been joined by Councilman Berlinda Lee.

Ty Hankerson

All right.

Ty Hankerson

I do want to, before I go to Councilman Murano,

Ty Hankerson

You mentioned that folks can pick up the phone and call the permit office and speak to a permit representative.

Ty Hankerson

I do want to talk about the permit offices just really briefly.

Ty Hankerson

Folks are assigned to each permit office by borough.

David Cerrone

Bear with me just for a moment.

David Cerrone

In Staten Island, there are three coordinators.

David Cerrone

In Queens, there are six.

David Cerrone

In Manhattan, there are eight.

David Cerrone

In Brooklyn, there are five.

David Cerrone

And in the Bronx, there are eight.

David Cerrone

Eight.

Ty Hankerson

Eight?

Ty Hankerson

Okay.

Ty Hankerson

I just want to make sure I have this correct.

Ty Hankerson

Staten Island, there are three.

Ty Hankerson

Queens, there are six.

Ty Hankerson

Manhattan, there are eight.

Ty Hankerson

Brooklyn, there are five.

Ty Hankerson

The Bronx, there are eight.

Ty Hankerson

Is that correct?

David Cerrone

That's by borough, yes.

Ty Hankerson

Okay.

Ty Hankerson

Out of curiosity, why does Brooklyn only have five?

David Cerrone

So I would have to get back to you on the precise amounts.

David Cerrone

You know, there are fluctuations in staffing.

David Cerrone

I can tell you in Brooklyn, they had a longstanding director, Nancy Melissas, who was a wonderful, wonderful colleague and so knowledgeable about Brooklyn Parks.

David Cerrone

And she had spent decades working in Brooklyn doing the permitting system, and she recently retired.

David Cerrone

And then one of her colleagues moved on to become the director of the permit office in Manhattan.

David Cerrone

So they may be a little bit lower because of that staffing transition, but we're happy to follow up with your office and get back to you.

David Cerrone

more precise answers.
