Chair Epstein asks DOT about education campaigns
Epstein asks about DOT's public education campaigns, and DOT describes working with schools, distributing materials, and multilingual outreach.
And how about the education side for DOT?
You're going to kind of public education campaign you're running to kind of talk about that?
Yeah, thank you, Chair.
One thing I want to note, too, to Chief Obey's point about the three E's, because there's also an engineering component, we've actually done a real good amount of data analysis and found when we provide bike lanes, it significantly reduces sidewalk riding.
So that just underscores kind of that we're taking this comprehensive approach.
We could talk in a little more depth about just more broadly our education.
campaigns?
Sure.
So we take public education really seriously.
We think that, you know, an all-of-the-above approach, as the Commissioner has said, is really a critical piece of the success of Vision Zero.
Education, you know, at every, you know, potential input, one piece obviously is the importance of educating our New York City school students.
So we are working closely with the New York City Public Schools team, both in terms of a curriculum approach as well as a broader sort of engaging with the schools around the logistics around their actual facilities as well.
So from a holistic perspective, ensuring that children have safe routes to school and know the risks of different types of devices in terms of their speed, the legality and all of that.
We have also done public education campaigns in the recent past, especially as we started to see the increase in the use of micromobility devices on our streets in the recent years to remind people to get smart before you start.
We distributed those materials widely to brick and mortar bike shops.
and community facilities to our sister agencies and to the broader public.
We also worked with stakeholders, including the delivery workers and their representative organizations, to really ensure we are going as far and wide as possible.
DOT maintains a multilingual staff for engagement purposes out in the field, and we use them regularly.
They are some of the same people that are engaging the delivery workers alongside DCWP staff, as well as engaging everyday New Yorkers for the high visibility corridors with Chief Obey's staff.
