Council Member Hanif asks NYPD about interactions with delivery workers
Hanif asks how frequently delivery workers interact with officers and what prompts those encounters, and NYPD says enforcement is not tied to whether someone is a delivery worker.
And then for the PD, how frequently would you say delivery workers are interacting with officers, and what is prompting those encounters?
And if you could be brief.
You know, it's a very hard question to answer, right?
Because when we are taking enforcement action, let's say a patrol officer sees someone on a bike or on an e-bike or in a car, right, driving recklessly, engaging in dangerous behavior.
Chief Obey said, you know, there are certain traffic rules that we emphasize.
They go directly to safety.
Right?
That entire interaction, right, they may not know if the person's a delivery star or not, right?
They may just not know.
At times, the person may say something, or it may be clear, or it may not.
So, in other words, enforcement action is not in any way tied to that.
And so that's not the kind of thing that we would really be...
quantifying in our data, if that makes sense.
And then just finally, what types of e-bikes are delivery workers typically using?
And how fast can they go?
Is that a question for DCWP, PD?
Thank you for the question, Councilor.
I don't know if we have that data accessible right now in terms of what workers, the specific types of vehicles workers are using.
But I think that's also why the administration is looking for additional tools, such as Instruction 78, Instruction 1069, that would help us understand, DOT specifically, receive data that would help them understand what vehicles the workers are using.
Thank you.
