Ira Gershenhorn testifies on cycling, affordability, and infrastructure
Ira Gershenhorn, 74, says he relies on his bike for daily tasks, supports Intros 244, 988, and 950, and calls for infrastructure over registration laws.
Hi, my name is Ira Gershenhorn.
I am 74.
I live on the Upper West Side in Sean Abrea's district, near Gail Brewer's district.
I rely on my bike to go shopping, go swimming, and tend a community garden, and do many community-oriented tasks, like being a New York City Park super steward
and filling a community food fridge and being a cycling without age pilot.
Safety in numbers.
I don't love deliveryistas on their e-bikes.
I don't love bike clubs.
But safety in numbers.
They make my shopping rides safer, so that's more important than loving them.
Affordability.
Affordability.
I bike where I want.
Getting rid of my car and using a bicycle saves me a ton of money and time.
It allows me to volunteer in my community.
I'm not sitting in a car or looking for a spot.
Infrastructure and not more laws.
Infrastructure, infrastructure, infrastructure.
Do not create laws requiring registration of e-bikes.
You will reduce safety, create complication, and greatly reduce affordability.
I support these bills, Intro 244, sponsored by Councilmember Hudson, Intro 988, sponsored by Councilmember Abrea, Intro 988,
sponsored by Councilmember Abrea, Intro 950, sponsored by Councilmember Shulman.
That's it.
Thank you.
