Richard Easley testifies on lack of accountability for e-bike riders
Richard Easley says e-bike riders have become an elite class that cannot be held accountable, and calls for passage of Priscilla's Law and an end to campaign contributions from Transportation Alternatives.
My name is Richard Easley.
Honorable Council members, today I want to congratulate you on an amazing accomplishment.
In the space of five, going on six years with truly little or no effort at all, you have created a whole new class of New York City citizens.
And what is remarkable is that this new elite class comes from all walks of life, a wide age range, and it encompasses the richest and the poorest.
Now, the new class doesn't have a name, but I can tell you who's in it and why.
They are both city and e-bike riders, pedicab drivers, e-bike delivery workers, and the vendors who hire those workers.
And they are allowed to freely flaunt not only rules of the roads and lanes they ride on, but even the city laws governing those roads and lanes.
Why are they elite?
Because they cannot be held accountable for any offense they commit or law they break.
It would take too long to list all those offenses, but the worst of them includes endangering or physically injuring.
another human being.
You want to take a look at your creation?
Spend an afternoon walking in my neighborhood along 9th and 10th Avenues between 59th Street and 34th.
A weekend would be the best.
Or even an afternoon in Central Park and behold your creation.
Stop your safety lip service and stop accepting campaign financing from the wolf in sheep's clothing that is transportation alternatives.
Pass Priscilla's law.
And I just want to quickly say you invited your constituency here to speak on this issue.
And most of us who've been here since 10 a.m.
This morning don't have the pleasure of speaking to even half the committee.
Thank you very much.
Next.
Please, please don't start his time yet.
Please put on the mic.
