Farías asks how OCS will address poverty and homelessness intersections
Farías asks how OCS and NGBV will address domestic violence alongside poverty and homelessness. Delany-Brumsey says the work involves social determinants and drivers of violence, flexible funding, emergency housing, and long-term infrastructure.
Yeah, I appreciate that.
I think a lot of the questions that have been risen for me during this process is like, how are we talking about this work
that involves poverty and those structures that we have throughout our city, even the intersection of domestic violence and homelessness across New York?
How are...
How will OCS address some of those issues in collaboration with or, you know, through NGBV?
And just wanting to make sure that we understand what the leading causes are.
We understand we're trying to create a comprehensive approach, but how are we going to ensure that that is actually happening, you know, under this larger umbrella?
That's a great question.
That is the work, figuring out how do we ensure that we're building an infrastructure that prevents harm, that responds to people in
the aftermath of really terrible harm, that supports them in the long term.
That not only means focusing on the individual, it means focusing on the...
as they live, the social structures that they're embedded in, finding ways to ensure that we are addressing those kind of underlying drivers or the social determinants of health, the way I think about it.
drivers of violence.
And that's a core principle of how I approach this work.
I think what's been nice is that feels like a very core principle for how the commissioner approaches this work.
And so I can't tell you the exact how other than we do have some programs that acknowledge this, you know, that focus on providing flexible funding to people, focus on getting them emergency housing.
But that is the absolute work of this office.
