Sethi explains cross-training model for DV and community violence providers

New York City Council · Sep 30, 2026 · starts 0:57:59 · 49 sec

Sethi says OCS does not need everyone to be an expert in everything, but cross-training helps teams understand distinct roles and refer survivors appropriately, similar to how legal and mental health staff collaborate in Family Justice Centers.

Saloni Sethi

Yeah.

Saloni Sethi

No, and I'll say, I think, you know, one of the things we talk about all the time, right, is like, is like,

Saloni Sethi

One of the beautiful things about even bringing the teams together and the orgs together and doing kind of like cross-training work is really understanding what people do that's different in a way that you don't always, right?

Saloni Sethi

And I think even as Commissioner Delaney Brumsey and I talk, like one of the things we want to avoid is...

Saloni Sethi

trying to get everybody to be experts in everything.

Saloni Sethi

We don't actually need that.

Saloni Sethi

We need people to be good at the things that they do and then figure out how to refer and cross-refer and build together, which, again, as Commissioner mentioned, is really the model of the FJCs, right?

Saloni Sethi

It's like we have legal staff that do legal services and mental health staff do mental health services, and they don't try and do the same thing, right?

Saloni Sethi

And that's kind of what we want to try and build on is that true collaboration where people hold their own piece and understand and respect sort of how they connect to the other work.
