Q&A

Farías asks second panel what city misses in GBV prevention

New York City Council · Sep 30, 2026 · starts 1:45:52 · 1 min 54 sec

Farías asks for gaps in prevention. Iman Ghad says youth need third spaces, mental health support, immigration support, and sustainable funding because gender-based violence is not a one-time issue.

Amanda C. Farías

Of course.

Amanda C. Farías

Just a question for the providers on the table, same as I asked in the previous panel.

Amanda C. Farías

What are some areas the city's not considering when it comes to preventing gender-based violence?

Amanda C. Farías

I know some folks have raised some things, but are there things that are hyper-specific to the work that you're doing?

Amanda C. Farías

I would love to hear some of that work.

I would love to echo the sentiment that was just shared, where prevention really does start with educating our young people.

And so more programming across the board needs to be done because as youth, they're already disempowered.

Member of the Public - Iman Ghad

Sometimes the gender-based violence they are experiencing is at home and they're not empowered enough to even speak about it.

Member of the Public - Iman Ghad

There is no third spaces for them.

And so, for example, as Girls for Gender Equity, we do serve as a third space for young people.

And that is something that is rare in their lives.

Member of the Public - Iman Ghad

But from there, they have to learn to speak about these experiences and learn about them and understand maybe what even is.

Member of the Public - Iman Ghad

Going on to be able to identify it as gender-based violence.

And so through our model of we use restorative justice, healing justice, a social work model, and also

more recently have been more invested in contributing to the research that goes into allowing young people to dive into the issues that they are seeing in their lives, be able to explore it themselves, and understand what solutions they can come up with.

Member of the Public - Iman Ghad

Through that, that is a huge part of prevention.

Member of the Public - Iman Ghad

Also, mental health support is a huge ask.

aspect of being able to provide young people with the resources they need to be able to work through the gender-based violence that they are experiencing in their lives, seeing families experience, their friends experience,

and immigration supports as well, because that is adding a lot more barriers.

And ultimately, this issue needs sustainable.

Member of the Public - Iman Ghad

Funding because this isn't a one-time issue and it needs for real structural change we need sustainable funding
