Stephanie Woodbine calls for support for children of survivors
Woodbine says the city must invest in helping children of survivors, especially when they enter the carceral system. She shares her own experience with her son's sentencing, custodial court, economic instability, and ACS surveillance.
I just have a comment regarding, from a survivor perspective, something that the city needs to invest in.
It's helping children of survivors, especially when they enter the carceral system.
That's important.
My son has just been sentenced to 25 years.
And I should have gotten just a little bit more.
My family should have gotten a little bit more of what we needed.
But that is definitely one place where we need coordination.
And now that there's this whole issue of domestic violence and community safety, it's gun violence related.
Why he's where he's at right now.
I was forced to stay in New York because I was in custodial court for 13 years.
And that impacted my son's development, me being in survival mode, my children were right there.
Economic instability, homelessness, you name it.
ACS used as a tool.
Of control and the court with their court-ordered surveillance and coercive control that was legal.
So these are certain conversations that survivors need to have out in the open.
Thank you.
