Liss explains geographic expansion and district selection criteria
Liss says 2K expanded geographically to meet full demand, selecting districts based on economic need, existing provider capacity, and geographic spread. She lists the five districts chosen for fall 2026.
We made the decision to expand 2K geographically so that when we bring 2K to a new area, we can work to meet full demand from the outset.
This aligns to our value that care should be universal.
In selecting where to place the first 2,000 seats for fall 2026, we looked at a multitude of factors, including economic need among families and areas where lower-income families had less access to free or subsidized care already.
We also considered licensed child care provider capacity.
Given the short timeline for implementation, we wanted to ensure that whichever neighborhoods we selected would have the capacity to serve interested children.
Lastly, we considered geography to spread 2K across as many boroughs as possible.
The areas we selected for 2K for fall 2026 included School District 6 in Manhattan, which includes Washington Heights, Hamilton Heights, and Inwood.
School District 10 in the Bronx, which includes Fordham, Belmont, Norwood, Morris Heights, Van Cortlandt Village, and Kingsbridge.
Districts 18 and 23 in Brooklyn, which includes Canarsie, Remsen Village, Brownsville, and Ocean Hill.
And District 27 in Queens, which includes Ozone Park, South Ozone Park, Richmond Hill, Woodhaven, Howard Beach, and the Rockaways.
While we have not finalized yet where 2K will be offered in fall 2027, we have committed that
The 10,000-seat expansion will include School District 31, which encompasses all of Staten Island.
