Brewer cites plate cap, overcharging complaints, and bogus credentials
Brewer says the city has about 850 authorized plates but 1,200–1,500 pedicabs operating, often with bogus credentials. She reports 172 pedicab complaints in 2025, with 86 involving overcharging and 35 unlicensed operators, and says tourists have been charged $500–$1,000 for 20-minute rides.
The report found, as you heard earlier, the city has approximately 850 authorized pedicab plates.
But an estimated, I don't know, 1,200 or 1,500 are operating by 2024 and probably more now.
They often have bogus credentials.
In 2025, there were 172 pedicab complaints, 311, half, 86, involved overcharging.
And another 35 involved unlicensed operators.
And there were probably more because often tourists don't complain.
We have heard that tourists have been charged $500 to nearly $1,000 for rides that are only 20 minutes.
So we need clearer rules.
Passengers need to know what they are being charged and who is responsible for the pedicab they are riding in.
There are many legitimate drivers and businesses.
They should not have to compete with unlicensed operators and their predatory behavior.
