Brewer questions DCWP on pedicab license lottery and suspensions
Brewer asks how one gets a pedicab license and how many have been suspended. Ortiz explains the annual spring lottery for registration plates, annual compliance checks, and plate removal for failed inspections.
Okay.
I mean, 330 have a license, 1,200 operating.
I think that's probably correct.
How does one go about getting a license?
And I think, I don't know if you answered this, but how many have been suspended?
If any, recently.
Thank you for the question, Council Member.
There's an annual lottery that the agency conducts over the springtime to issue registration plates to licensed pedicab businesses.
And once you're selected for a lottery, you can get the registration plate.
I think in the last lottery,
We were able to get up to 330 total registered vehicles.
When you become a licensee, we do compliance checks on your vehicle to ensure that the cab condition is accurate, the signage is accurate.
We do those annually.
If a business fails that annual inspection, we will take away the plate until there's a correction to that issue.
But I think, you know, again...
There's a small subset of actors, or there's a small subset of the industry that are following the rules.
That's 330 folks.
But clearly, for all of us who've been in these spaces, we know that there's more pedicabs operating out there.
