Hesham Mahmoud asks for electric assist to continue working at 67
Hesham Mahmoud, a 67-year-old New York Pedicab Alliance committee member and driver since 2017, says he loves his job but his body cannot keep up with pedaling uphill for hours. He asks the Council to support electric assist so he can keep working with dignity.
You finished.
All right.
Thank you.
Go ahead, sir.
Good afternoon, everyone.
My name is Hisham Mahmoud.
I am a committee member of New York Bidiqab Alliance.
New York is my home for the last 40 years.
I have worked as a Bidiqab driver since...
2017.
I am 67 years old.
I love my job.
I love meeting people who come from around the world to see New York.
I get to show them the city that became my home and help
them live with a good memory.
This work is how I support myself and my family for many years.
It is what I have known and what I have relied on.
I have mentioned very
I have maintained a very clean driving record, and I take my responsibility for my passengers seriously.
But today I have to tell you
something that is difficult to admit.
It is very hard to do this work the way I used to.
I still want to work.
I still know the city.
I still know how to welcome my passengers and take care of them.
But when I have to battle people uphill or keep going for many hours, my body cannot always keep up.
With my willingness.
It is hard to love your work and feel yourself becoming unable to do it.
This is why I'm asking you to support the electric assist.
Thank you, everyone.
