Hankerson questions litter basket placement criteria and disparities
Hankerson asks how DSNY determines litter basket placement. Anderson cites bus routes, subway stations, commercial corridors, and BID areas, and Hankerson points to a disparity between Metropolitan Avenue and Archer Avenue in Queens.
So how does the agency determine where litter baskets are placed?
There's a number of factors that go into it.
We look at things like bus routes.
We look at things like subway stations.
Litter baskets, because they are predominantly for the kind of trash that you have when you're walking around, a coffee cup, a water bottle, a sandwich wrapper,
we predominantly put them in places along commercial corridors because that's where you have the most pedestrians and the most people sort of carrying that material.
And then we look at other factors like where there are bids, there are more litter baskets because the bids, in some cases, purchase those litter baskets themselves.
And in addition, they service the litter baskets on a much more frequent basis.
So in bid areas, we have a much higher concentration.
Got it.
I'm glad you said that.
So in Queens.
The intersection of Metropolitan Avenue and Leopards Boulevard, there are six litter baskets.
But in Southeast Queens, Archer Avenue and Parsons Boulevard,
which is the major hub, it's the only transportation hub in Southeast Queens, there are zero.
What's the reasoning for that?
I can't speak to that specific intersection.
I know my office has been trying to schedule some time for me to come out and do a walkthrough with you, so happy to come out whenever you'd like and we can chat about specific needs and if we need to add more litter baskets, we will do that.
Okay.
If we can look into it before the walkthrough, so that's not actually in my district, but that station is serviced or used by folks in my district.
It's actually in Deputy Speaker Nantosha Williams'district.
There was actually a...
Community cleanup that happened and you know it's kind of going viral right now I can send you the video because the major question is why are there no garbage bins in this corridor that sees thousands of people
