Hankerson asks about basket types and council funding
Hankerson asks how DSNY determines the type of litter basket placed on a corner. Anderson says council members can express preferences and fund specific baskets, and that DSNY tries to honor those requests while maintaining corridor consistency.
hour after hour it just doesn't really make sense how do you determine the type of litter basket that's placed on a corner
There's a couple different factors we take into account.
One, some council members tell us they prefer a certain type of litter basket, and if they do that, then we try to honor that preference.
Some council members fund a specific kind of litter basket.
So for the newer, better bin litter baskets, those cost about $1,200 each.
And so we're only able to buy with our budgeted funding a few hundred of those a year.
But if a city council member says, I'd like to purchase 250 for my district, we honor that request.
They give us a...
The money, we purchase the baskets, and we put them out.
Okay.
All right.
But generally, you know, we're trying to achieve a consistent look and feel across a given corridor.
So if a member allocates money towards the purchase of litter baskets, do they have more of a say as to where those litter baskets go, or is that still fully determined by DSNY?
Every council member can provide input on where the litter baskets go.
When they're buying litter baskets, sure, we have a conversation about where would you like the, again, let's use the number 250, but it could be 10, 20, 30, 40.
We have a conversation with that member's office around where do you want these specific litter baskets to go?
Do you want to replace?
Older litter baskets?
Do you want to try to fill in gaps in the litter basket network?
So we have that conversation with every- I have a follow up to that, but I'm running out of time.
