Sanchez reports 15% citywide waste decrease but no full compliance
Sanchez cites the 2025 Waste Equity Law Implementation Annual Report showing a 15% citywide decrease in waste transfer volume. However, he notes that none of the four designated districts have achieved full compliance with required capacity reductions.
The most recent Waste Equity Law Implementation Annual Report for calendar year 2025 was just released last month.
We are pleased that DSNY's data shows that overall,
The waste transportation volume is approximately 6.
15,083 tons per day, which represents a 15% decrease in the waste transfer volume citywide.
I want to underscore that, citywide in the law's passage.
However, that being said, we are concerned that none, zero,
of the four designated community districts slated for the mandated reductions in permitted private transfer station capacity have achieved full compliance with the reduction of the requirements of the waste equity law.
Additionally, we are worried that the permitted capacity reductions we have seen
targeted mostly unused capacity at waste transfer stations, and that two stations appear to have not gone any reduction whatsoever.
And just so that everyone is on the same page.
So out of the four community districts that we spoke about, Brooklyn CD1, Queen CD12, Bronx CD1, and Bronx CD2.
Brooklyn CD1 was supposed to have a 50% reduction in capacity, whereas Queens CD12, Bronx 1, and Bronx 2 were supposed to have a 33% reduction in capacity, and none of those targets have been hit.
