Wilson asks about litter basket replacement wait times
Council Member Wilson asks about wait times for replacing missing litter baskets after a 311 call. Anderson says wait times vary, that DSNY is systematically replacing baskets, and that the goal is to replace every identified missing basket by the end of the calendar year.
Thank you, Chair.
My colleague from Queens asked a lot of my questions, so may not use the whole time.
Just on the replacements of the baskets, you said you buy a few hundred a year.
A few hundred of the better bins.
Of the better bins.
Yes.
Okay.
So what is the wait time like on a replacement right now?
If someone makes a 311 call, they're missing one here.
How long does it take?
For a new basket to go out to the corner?
Yes, the wait time, I would say, varies because we're trying to replace baskets pretty systematically.
You know, we right now actually just got an update from my team that Councilmember Williams baskets are in the process of being replaced.
So some of those that may have been missing and identified in that viral video are in the process of being replaced as we get litter baskets in from our vendor.
So, you know, if it's a 311 complaint, it might be a few weeks or even a month or two before they're replaced if we had just done a big replacement cycle in that district because we want to try to sort of fill all the holes.
Our goal is by the end of this calendar year to have replaced every litter basket that we've identified as
as an approved location that is missing, and then have a sort of good baseline for being able to replace litter baskets on a more consistent basis going forward.
The last administration, just to be frank, did not emphasize replacing missing litter baskets.
They were much more focused on buying fewer of the nicer, better bin litter baskets,
rather than many, many more of the utilitarian green wire litter basket that we all know and love.
We are trying to balance those two things by buying more of the green wire litter baskets in order to be able to just fill the holes that we know are out there.
